How to Prepare a Wisconsin Site for Drone Photography

A productive aerial shoot begins before the crew arrives. Share the right location details, prepare the site, and leave room for the pilot to make safe decisions as conditions change.

The best time to discover a locked gate, active crane, airport restriction, confidential work area, or missing site contact is not when the drone is ready to launch. A short planning conversation protects the schedule and gives the crew more time to focus on the media.

A street address is the starting point, but it may not identify the correct launch area, property limits, or part of a large site. Send a dropped map pin, annotated site plan, or marked screenshot when the location is not obvious. Note the preferred entrance, where the crew can park, and who can open a gate or provide access.Also identify anything the camera should include or avoid. A commercial campus may have a photogenic public entrance and a restricted production area. A construction site may have an active zone that changes by the hour. A waterfront property may need a specific shoreline relationship in the frame.

Let airspace planning happen early

Commercial drone work in the United States generally operates under FAA Part 107. The remote pilot—not the client—must determine the applicable airspace, operating limits, aircraft requirements, and whether an authorization or waiver is needed.Class G operations do not require air traffic control permission, while operations in Class B, C, D, and certain Class E airspace require authorization. The FAA’s Low Altitude Authorization and Notification Capability, or LAANC, supports many requests for controlled airspace at or below 400 feet. LAANC is an authorization tool, not a complete preflight check; pilots still need to review weather, notices, temporary restrictions, and other operating conditions.Share the address as early as possible so the pilot can complete that review. Some requests can be handled quickly; other locations or proposed operations may require more lead time or a different plan.

What a commercial client should verify

  • The operator holds a current FAA Remote Pilot Certificate for Part 107 work.
  • The aircraft is properly registered and Remote ID compliant when required.
  • The operator can explain how airspace and site risks affect the proposed shot.
  • Insurance documentation is available when the property, contract, or client requires it.

Wind, visibility, precipitation, temperature, sun angle, lake haze, snow cover, and seasonal vegetation can all change the result. Safe operating conditions come first. After that, the creative goal determines which conditions are acceptable.A listing may benefit from warm, directional light and a weather backup. A progress visit may prioritize a clear record on the scheduled week. An industrial shoot may need a specific operating window regardless of whether the sky is dramatic. Decide which qualities are required and which are preferences.

  • Explain whether the schedule, the sky, or the activity onsite has the highest priority.
  • Tell the crew if winter conditions, fall color, active production, or low traffic is part of the intended story.
  • Expect the remote pilot to delay, modify, or stop a flight if conditions are not safe or compliant.

Onsite readiness

Prepare people, traffic, and access

A drone crew needs a safe place to launch and maintain visual contact with the aircraft. Keep that area away from unnecessary foot traffic, moving equipment, overhead hazards, and unsecured materials. On active sites, the superintendent or site contact should know when the crew is arriving and where the pilot plans to work.Coordinate employees, residents, visitors, and vehicles before capture begins. The pilot may need to change a path, wait for people to clear an area, use a visual observer, or skip a view that cannot be completed safely under the planned conditions. Those decisions are easier when one onsite contact can coordinate quickly.Site readiness also improves the pictures. Remove temporary signs that should not appear, close visible dumpsters, position branded vehicles intentionally, complete exterior cleanup, and confirm that permanent signage and lighting are working. For interior or ground-level coverage, identify the rooms and processes that are approved for photography.
